What drew me to the Indie/Alternative genre was the rock influences. The grunge revival of the 1990's maintained a strong focus on influences like joy division and Radiohead. the mumble-like singing and strong powerful bass
My target audience are young adults and older teenagers as I am targeting younger generations in a revival sense and the older generations for the nostalgia.
GENRE AND AUDIENCE
Here are some films I look to for stylistic inspiration in terms of my filming process and cinematography:

KIDS (1995)
Empire Records (1995)

INTERTEXTUALITY
Intertextuality can be defined as when one media text references another
In this music video there are two key subtle intertextual references in the lyrics:
-
"I bet you look good on the dance floor" -> Saturday Night Fever
-
"Your name isn't Rio, but I don't care for sand" -> Rio, Duran Duran
This is done to connect with their audience and also to separate and mock the typical songs about picking up women by dancing.
In this music video there are a few intertextual references in the animation and action:
-
The animation style is a direct intertextual reference to a UK TV series called The Trumptonshire trilogy (1966-1969)
-
In the video the pagan rituals and sacrifice is an indirect reference to The Wicker man 1973

This is done to mock the depicted perfection of society and to also connect with their audience.
I will personally only reference particular tropes and make a subtle reference to the idea of a transformation scene in terms of intertextuality rather than make direct references. Since the song is of the Indie/Alternative genre, I want my focus to feel more real rather than having the audience connect to it only if they have seen particular niche content.
