MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS
KEY FEATURES OF AN INDIE MUSIC VIDEO:
-
Slight uncomfortable feel
-
Handheld camera
-
Use of mid shots and close ups
-
Blend of live performance and narrative
In this video, the absurdist style of the fighting clowns contrasts the quite aggressive guitar tone. The Indie mood is portrayed clearly with the vintage filter and handheld camera. The simple setting and low budget sets add to this feel whilst the mise-en-scene of specifically the vintage clown costumes gives it an immediate alternative feel.
In this video, the strokes who are my band of choice completely disregard any sense of narrative and keep their shots to simplistic close ups and extreme closeups. This intense intimacy with the band and specifically their singer makes the band itself feel more relatable another key factor the indie genre. However, again, there is an uncomfortable undertone as the singer stares straight into the camera when singing, forcing the audience to feel off put. Key to indie videos, the bass line is heavily featured.

In this music video, the Wallows focus in on the vintage aesthetic and emphasise it, not only to match with their lyrics but also to add to the indie genre. Furthermore, I took heavy inspiration from their moustaches used and the low budget settings of the beach and the house really proved the genre yet again. Furthermore, in this clip we can see, unlike the other two, a blend of live performance and narrative which again I took for inspiration in my own piece. In this particular video, the alternative uncomfortability comes from the awkwardness of the actors themselves and the ending/climax of the narrative as the boy's rejection is felt by the audience.
